Office Desks for Home and Other Considerations for a Home Office

Working from home, or telecommuting as many people call it, is a growing trend.  A lot of people have seen the advantages of having a home office.  When you work at home, you don’t have to face the daily grind of heavy traffic to get to the office, you don’t have to prepare office attire, and you don’t have to wake up as early.  By working at home, you can save money on transportation and clothing costs, and more time can be spent on personal and family matters.

But working from home also means that the home employee has to set up a home office.  Working in the living room or dining area can work for some time, but in the long run it can be bothersome, especially if things needed for work are in another room, or if other people at home already.  The noise, the inconvenience of having to go from one room to another, and removing stuff because the kitchen counter or dining table needs to be used for something else can become tedious.  Moreover, in order to work well from home, there has to be a place that the telecommuter can call his or her own, and where he or she is in the right mindset to work without being disturbed or tempted to do anything else.  For these reasons, it is important to set up a home office.

A home office does not need to be in a separate enclosed room. One can select from among a selection of office desks for home available in furniture shops and set it up with a comfortable chair in one corner of a room. Any area, as long as it is quiet and has sufficient lighting can be considered for a home office.  The home worker has to condition his or her mind that this area is strictly for work and no other activity (like eating, leisure reading or web surfing) can be done there.  Household members should also be told to respect the privacy of the area, so no one else should be in the home office space except for the home worker.  It should also be clear that should the home worker be at his or her space, it is assumed that he or she is working, so noise levels should be kept at a minimum.

Selecting furniture for a home office can be a challenge, as there are a lot different types available.  For telecommuters whose job nature is administrative work, the essentials include a computer or laptop, an office desk, an internet connection, a table lamp, and, if possible, a fax machine and dedicated phone line.  Some people prefer to keep their desktop computers in a computer armoire that has more storage space for files and other office supplies.  On the other hand, those who are into crafts such as jewelry, quilt, dressmaking or other handicrafts may prefer to have craft furniture like a craft desk and shelves for storing their materials rather than having an ordinary office desk.  Whether a stay-at-home worker has a computer armoire, craft furniture, or just an ordinary office desk, it is important that their working area is always organized and dedicated to work.
