Why won’t my Laptop Power up?
I got a first generation Centrino laptop, which sports a 256MB DDR 266 MHz RAM….
so yesterday I decided to upgrade the RAM, but the salesman plugged a 512MB DDR PC5400 instead (which has a different clockspeed than mine, which my laptop only support up to 333Mhz).
When I tried to power up the laptop, nothing shows on the screen, although the fan, CD-ROM tray, and the harddisk works. I tried replacing the RAM with my old one, but it still doesn’t work. Now I’m confused.
Anyone with similiar issues? What would you suggest? Is that even possible, ruining the whole computer by falsely plugging the wrong RAM? Is my mobo toast?
Ok I did this on a computer the other day, I added 2 PC2700 DDR 512 333mhz sticks in, replacing the 2 PC2100 256 266mhz sticks and I had the same result. After troubleshooting (adding in one stick at a time) I determined that one was bad. After replacing the bad one the whole system came up.
Now if the ram stick you went back to was not handled properly it could have gone bad due from simple static shock, like when you touch someone on a carpet and get shocked. Ram is very sensitive to this, you should alway ground your self to the computers frame before touching the ram.
Try this, make sure the power is disconnected. AND the battery is out (people forget this one).
Reseat the ram and only connect the AC power and try to boot. of it still fails, take it to a computer store and have them check the ram. If it is bad replace it with correct PC2700 Sodimm chip.
Should fix the problem. And no its not dead, I have put incorrect ram or bad ram in hundreds of machine and I have never had one that won’t boot after installing the correct ram or ensuring the ram is seated firmly.
